What is PUR Binding?
PUR binding is a form of perfect binding using Polyurethane Reactive (PUR) adhesive. This adhesive offers significantly increased binding strength. Once the adhesive has been set, page pull tests are often up to 50 percent stronger. A PUR book is so strong it will not fall apart, even under heavy usage under all conditions. It is also very flexible so it will lie flat without breaking the spine.
PUR is also unaffected by extreme temperatures which means it will not melt or crack and can be used in any climate. Because PUR is so strong, less adhesive is needed to firmly bind. Less glue means less distortion of the spine’s shape. We are able to use less glue which gives a thinner square appearance.
How it can be used
We are able to PUR bind on a wide range of papers and finishes including Varnishes, UV-Cured Coatings, Aqueous Coatings, Coated Papers, Uncoated Papers and Boards in a variety of weights from 48 pages to 800+ pages.
For many customers, we advise using it to bind books, magazines, catalogues, directories, and journals.
A real-world example: PUR bound booklet
We recently produced this great looking booklet. This is an example of the minimum thickness that can be achieved using PUR binding and, as you can see, it looks great and lays completely flat.
This particular project was for 10,000 booklets printed, PUR bound, poly-wrapped, and mailed (we have an in-house mailing service) in a week!
